It was February 2020, the first case of COVID 19 in Mexico had not yet been registered. Media was flooded with news related to the disease. However, all the information was fragmented or contradictory, so people still had a lot of questions. That’s why I decided to gather information from reliable sources and to make a video to help explain  what was certainly known about the virus and the disease at that moment. This video was made by one person from start to finish, from research to preproduction, recording, design, art direction, audio design, editing and post-production.

RESEARCH
Content was coming from everywhere but certainty was coming from nowhere. Some media in Mexico published data on the severity of the disease that did not corresponded with other sources. The virus was coming and there was no certainty of its severity. The best information was found at english speaking sources but in spanish there was a lot of information missing. I recurred to serious and reliable international media, scientific publications and official international authorities press releases to be able to generate a reliable report that would help solve people’s most basic questions.

PRE-PRODUCTION
Time to filter all of the information and turn it into a script that can be sliced into actionable parts to decide how the video looks, feels and sounds. This process is followed by aesthetic references research, moodboard, storyboards and sketches creation to work as the foundation for the final piece.  The final step of this process is deciding what gear to use, when and how long the production takes to adapt my own time and resources to tackle the challenge.

PRODUCTION
Recording took only a day. Using my own living room as a set with a couple LED lights to create a consistent light environment, a small teleprompter, a monitor to make sure i was keeping myself in focus and a Fujifilm digital camera with a 1950’s Zeiss adapted lense was enough to get a high quality image.

POST-PRODUCTION
Post is the fun part. It mostly consist in editing the base and then adding all of the visual and sound elements to make the piece go alive. All of the pre-production decisions are turned into final assets like Photoshop and illustrator files to animate in After Effects and all of the music and sound effects are processed to fit in time and rythm.

EDITING ↓
Rythm, rythm, rythm. Editing is all about that. Engaging the viewer through rythm and mood changes to create different contexts is key to make a 10 minute video entertaining, ejoyable, and above all: clear.

MOTION DESIGN
Motion is one of my favorite steps. As a designer is taking graphics to the next level, designing with a sense of motion, creating with a begining, core and end view all the time makes the job more interesting.

AUDIO DESIGN ↓
During the pre production process a set of sound effects and music was selected. Int his part of the production all of those sounds are leveled, the music is trimmed and addapted and then everything is mastered to work perfectly no matter the device the viewer will be using.
